Campfire Program


Each summer, from the first week of June through the last week of July, Makoshika State Park offers a Campfire Program to park visitors. The educational and entertainment based presentations occur every other Thursday evening from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the park's outdoor amphitheater. Admission is free. Wear clothing appropriate for an outdoors setting.

Thursday, June 3, 2010, 7:00 pm: Post Cretaceous Landscape
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Professor of Geology John Isabel and Mike Kennedy, graduate student, will discuss how the landscape changed after an asteroid collided into Earth 65 million years ago. Program will be held at the Hiatt Amphitheater.

Thursday, June 17, 2010, 7:00 pm: Agrosecurity
USDA Fort Keogh Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Rachel Endecott will speak on issues dealing with agricultural security and how it affects agricultural producers and consumers. Program will be held at the Hiatt Amphitheater.

Thursday, June 24, 2010, 6:30 pm: Campfire Remembrance Ceremony
Sponsored by Glendive Medical Center Home Care and Hospice, this event commemorates loved ones who are no longer with us physically but remain close in our hearts and thoughts. Program will be held at the group use shelter.

Thursday, July 1, 2010, 7:00 pm: Sustainable Farming
Dena Hoff will discuss her recent participation in The Peoples Summit on Climate Change, held recently in Bolivia, and its focus on local sustainable family agriculture food systems. Program will be held at the Hiatt Amphitheater.

Thursday, July 8, 2010, 8:30 pm: Shakespeare In The Park
For their 4th annual performance at Makoshika, Montana Shakespeare in the Parks will be performing Julius Caesar. Brutus, Cassius, and other high-ranking Romans plot to murder Caesar because they believe his ambition will lead to tyranny. The program will be held at 8:30 pm to fulfill their desire to perform under the lights at the Hiatt Amphitheater.

Thursday, July 29, 2010: Badlands Rock Band Jam
Got an axe to grind? Bring your band to the badlands and take your turn rockin' the hills of Makoshika! Set length will depend upon the number of bands that show up to play. Program will be held at the Hiatt Amphitheater.

Makoshika State Park Campfire Program will be held at Makoshika State Park. Take I-94 Glendive Exits and follow signs two to three miles through town to Makoshika State Park. Makoshika is adjacent to the southeast city limits.
